The winter season is upon us once more and the cold is working its way into every nook and cranny. Many people do not have the luxury of lounging near the fire drinking tea to warm their bones. The majority of us have to venture out into the cold and wind to make our living or we may want to spend time outside with our friends and loved ones. Whatever our choice for braving the cold, we require layers of shelter from the freezing winter’s chill.

Warm clothing is the best way to defend yourself against bad and cold weather as well as illness, if you are warmly dressed, you usually don’t have to worry about getting sick. There are hundreds of different kinds of clothing styles and fabrics to choose from, it can boggle the mind when it is time to make your choice, however the tried and true options of wool and velvet are always available.

Wool coats and overalls are incredibly sought after during the winter because they are warm, cosy, very rich and thick. The comfort and warmth that the Woollen fabric provides if taken care of correctly can last for years or even decades. Wool fabrics come in a variety of weaves, are easy to sew, and look good on people of all ages and styles.

Velvet is another leading winter fabric and is very popular with designers world wide to create their fanciest clothing for the Haut Couture. From tops and hand warmers, to coats and leg warmers, velvet is in use all over the clothing spectrum. Velvet has a very distinct feel or “nap” which is given by its woven fabric with tufted fine cut threads. It is a very richly textured and is a tactile fabric which adds to its popularity.

Because of the tufted nature, velvet is is a warm fabric which is nice during winter, and it hugs the body closely. Velvet comes in many different colors and dress cuts are favored by women for parties. Because of its ability to warm the human body, many folks prefer to wear only the velvet party dress, opting out of the extra layer of clothing for the evening.

That’s why clothes made from wool and velvet are a must for your winter wardrobe. They look especially good together and offer a lot of versatility. You can dress up a pair of jeans with a velvet top with jeans. And its really cold outside, just wear your wool jacket to complete a warm and wonderful look. Velvet is a more popular choice than wool for more dressy occasions, given its luxurious texture and feel. Wool is more common for everyday styles.

When all is said and done, both wool and velvet are important winter fabrics. After all, what would you do without your favorite wool coat? And we can’t forget those soft cashmere sweaters either. They are not only warm, but make beautiful additions to any wardrobe. Because of their many uses and styles, both wool and velvet are the perfect choices for winter.
