The type of bag that is designed to be small and be able to carry small articles is what we generally call a wallet or billfold. It is useful for carrying such items as money, various types of cards, and small amount of coins. Because of its size and compatibility it easily fits in ones pant pockets or purse. Wallets are usually made out of leather or leather like materials.

The early use of the word wallet comes from the early Germanic language but in the early days the word did not mean the wallet we use nowadays, but rather any thing that could be used as a bag to carry things in it. But the word wallet in the way we know it did not happen until the earlier part of the 19th century.

There was a time in Europe, that is during the renaissance times people would carry their personnel belongings in a small pouch or bag that was generally attached to the trousers along with their sword. This pouch was called the \”bowgett\” in England. The \”bowgett\” is most likely the early predecessor of the modern day wallet.

Strangely enough when the first wallets as we know it came into use in the 19th century there was certain type of stigmas attached to it. One of the main ones was that it was considered rude to show ones wallet in public and wearing it on your belt was a strict no no. And in some countries, Spain for example, the wallet was mainly used to carry tobacco products.

Nowadays there are so many different varieties of wallets available. There is the bi-fold wallet, tri-fold wallet, breast wallet and so on. One type of wallet that is somewhat new to the wallet family is the kid\’s wallet. Available in many colors and prints they are popular with parents also, because it will generate some level of monetary responsibility in children.
