If you wear prescription glasses, you have a few choices to protect your eyes from the dangerous rays of the sun. Many people must wear corrective lenses when driving. Unless you are wearing contact lenses, this means that you cannot wear normal sunglasses. Instead, you must choose clip on glasses, which leave a lot to be desired, have a separate pair of prescription sunglasses or choose transition lenses. The following information is to help you make the choice of separate sunglasses vs transition lenses.
Transition lenses are photosensitive. That means that they change color when they are exposed to sunlight. Outside they dark, but come back inside and they get light again. This prevents the wearer from having to change glasses when moving from the inside to the outside.
Instead, the glasses change for you. When your are driving your car and the sun suddenly breaks through the clouds, your glasses will sense the bright light and change color. When you are driving in the evening and the sun goes down, the glasses sense the change in lighting conditions and change back toward the clear side so that you can still see clearly.
However, there are some disadvantages to transition lenses.
Transition lenses can sometimes take several minutes to change from dark to light or from light to dark. This transition time may mean that it is difficult to see when you first come inside and may leave you squinting when you first go outside.
If you choose separate sunglasses, they can be tinted darker than transition lenses. For people that are very light sensitive, this can be an advantage. The darker sunglasses can also be put on before leaving the inside of a building to avoid the shock of walking out into the sun.
You will probably not save money by buying transition lenses. The difference in cost is almost what you would pay for a pair of prescription sunglasses. In addition, if you have vision insurance, your insurance may not pay for transition lenses, but it will often pay for a spare pare of glasses. With the spare pair of glasses, you pay the price for tinting and you have prescription sunglasses. You can choose how dark or how light you want the tint to be. The cost of tinting glasses is often relatively inexpensive.
