Rainbow topaz is an inexpensive, elegant and trendy gemstone that has become one of today’s most sought-after gems. Also known as mystic topaz, rainbow topaz is a natural topaz treated to show the desired rainbow effect. It makes for a unique piece of jewelry due to its multi-colored brilliance.
Rainbow topaz, also called mystic topaz, is an enhanced or treated colorless topaz with the rainbow effect. It is not a naturally occurring topaz, but it is made from a real topaz, which has been artificially treated with a thin film or coating to give the desired rainbow effect. This process is called vacuum deposition.
Rainbow topaz is a product of pure topaz coated with an ultrathin film like the ones used on camera films. The stones pavilion, the underside angled portion that typically forms the bulk of the gem is applied with the coating, typically, a thin layer of titanium or light metal. It results to interference effect which gives rainbow effect of different colors. The coating alters the stones natural refraction. Stunning rainbow colors is then achieved.
Topaz is not a sky-blue color gem, but of many colors. Tinted with impurities, it has red, blue, pink, orange, brown, straw yellow or wine yellow and pale gray color in the stone. Also depending on the impurities present on the gemstone, it also comes in gentle tones like translucent or transparent, pale to medium red, pink-brown, yellow to yellow brown and orange-brown.
The most valuable is the pink to reddish topaz. This variety was found first in Russia. During that time it is only the Czar and his chosen people who are allowed to own it. Blue topaz is said to have healing powers to treat eye problems. The most common color is yellow with a red tint.
Ancient Romans associate topaz with Jupiter their son god Ra. For centuries topaz holds mystical powers. It was believed to improve the eyesight of the wearer and dispels all enchantments.
