Black pearls are adorned for its luster, richness and uniqueness. These qualities make the black pearl jewelry the ultimate gift of love and romance. It is an excellent addition to any outfit and makes the whole look very classic, elegant, stunning and stylish. Black pearl jewelry is indeed a timeless piece most women desire and celebrities prefer.

Black pearl is rare tinted pearl that is naturally black in color. It is produced by Pinctada Margaritifera. The Pinctada Margaritifera is a salt water pearl oyster that grows up to the size of a dinner plate. The pearl produced is black because of the black pigment that the oyster secretes. Black pearl is frequently referred to as Black Tahitian Pearls because the pearl oyster that produces it can only be found in Tahitian and French Polynesian Islands in the South Pacific Ocean.

Pinctada Margaritifera rarely produces pearls and white pearl oysters rarely produce naturally black pearls, so black pearl is really extraordinary. Pinctada Margaritifera cannot be cultured because it is very sensitive to changing climate, ocean condition and cannot survive the culturing process.

In ancient Asian history time, black pearl jewelry was used as the official symbol of the legitimate ruler or emperor. If the ruler wears the right kind of piece of black pearl jewelry especially large ones, he is regarded as the divine emperor.

In the paradise island of French Polynesia black pearl jewelry is believed as the symbol of renewal and hope for humanity. It even harnesses the magical colors of the rainbow after the storm, according to the native tribes.

In Europe, aside from amulets, black pearl jewelry is worn by enchanters because they believed that it would bring them good luck. Healers also use it for extra help with their spells to cure the sick. It was also used by soothsayers to see the future. The soothsayers gazed into the waves of swirling colors in black pearl jewelry.

Women who are classy and stylish prefer black pearl because of its luster, richness and uniqueness. Second to the white pearls in popularity, it can also be made into fashionable necklaces, earrings and rings. Black pearls are naturally eye-catching and can be worn with casual and dressy attire.

Black pearl is usually made with white gold or platinum to offset its luxurious look. Some prefer it in yellow gold setting, while others in silver. It instantly makes any wardrobe look elegant and classy.

Here are some tips in buying black pearls.

1. Color: Not all black pearl are black. Some are gray, blue, deep purple, peacock green etc. So know the exact color you want.

2. Size: The larger the pearl, the rare and the more valuable it is. Black pearls are often larger than other pearls. Black pearls start at 8 millimeters and average about 10 to 11 millimeters while other pearls range from 4 to 7 millimeters.

3. Iridescence: Check the iridescence of the pearl by rotating and checking the black pearl for a shimmer of greenish-black and blue orient color in it. The iridescence or orient is the property of the black pearl’s surface which appear to change color as the angle of views changes. This is caused by overlapping of successive layers which break up light falling on the surface.

4. Luster: Check the nacre to see the mirror effect of the pearl. This is what we refer to as luster. The higher the mirror effect, the better the pearl because the thicker its layers are. If the nacre looks dull and fuzzy, it is thin and will wear off quickly.

5. Shape: Like white pearls, black pearls come in different shapes such as pear, rice and baroque shapes. But, the most prized shaped is perfectly round.

6. Surface: Check the surface of the pearl. Make sure that there is no pitting or chip. The black pearl’s surface must be thoroughly smooth.
